Rhodes packing list for families: what you actually need 🎒
Every generic packing list tells you to bring sunscreen and a hat. This one tells you which sunscreen works best on a Greek beach in 40°C, why water shoes aren't optional, and what you definitely do not need to carry from home. Rhodes-specific, from someone who watches tourists arrive every summer. 😄
The Rhodes non-negotiables 🌞
Water shoes (every family member) 👟
Even sandy beaches have pebbles at the waterline. Rocky entry points catch toes. Boats have ladders. Renting one at the beach costs more than buying a set before you leave. This is the single most-mentioned packing regret from families we see every summer. Every. Single. Person.
High-SPF waterproof sunscreen — factor 50+ for kids
Available in all resort shops and supermarkets, but: (a) more expensive than at home, (b) brands differ and sensitive-skinned kids can react. A large bottle of familiar kids' SPF 50+ spray from home beats a panicked supermarket run on day one. Spray format is significantly easier when chasing a toddler.
Baby carrier or compact sling
Lindos is cobblestones and stairs. The Rhodes Old Town is cobblestones and stairs. Pefkos side streets are steep. Your stroller will be more carried than pushed at some point — a carrier means you enjoy these places instead of battling them.
Lightweight sun hat per child (with chin strap)
Available here, but one that stays on in sea breeze and doesn't blow off on a boat is harder to find in a resort shop than you'd think. Bring one you know they'll keep on.
Children's medication
Greek pharmacies are excellent and pharmacists often speak English. But Calpol is sold as Depon or Panadol Baby here, ibuprofen brands differ, and if you have a child who will only take one specific format (flavour, liquid vs tablets), bring your own supply. Pack double what you think you need, split across two bags.
Refillable water bottles (one per person)
Tap water in most of Rhodes is drinkable (less so in the very south). Bottled water is cheap and everywhere. But four people at the beach needing water every hour = a lot of plastic and a lot of expense. Reusable bottles + top up at the hotel = solved.
The Rhodes-specific useful extras 🏝️
- UV swim suit / rash vest for kids — Rhodes' high UV makes this genuinely useful, not just anxious parenting. Keeps sunscreen application areas manageable.
- Waterproof phone pouch — boats, water parks, pedalos. Very cheap, very useful.
- Small first aid kit — plasters, antiseptic wipes, tweezers (sea urchin spines), motion sickness tablets (boat days). Pharmacies cover everything else.
- Evening mosquito protection — Rhodes has mosquitoes at dusk, especially near green areas. Plug-in repellers for the room, and a spray for outdoor evening dinners. Available here but easily forgotten.
- Lightweight long sleeves per child — for the 12–4pm sun window and the dusk mosquito hour. One per kid is enough.
- Snacks from home — familiar snacks for the journey and early beach days. Rhodes has every supermarket you need within a day or two of arrival.
- EHIC/GHIC cards — each family member's own card, and travel insurance. See the insurance guide.
What NOT to pack 🚫
- Nappies/diapers in huge quantities — available everywhere. Buy locally and save the suitcase space.
- Formula — major brands available in supermarkets; if your brand is very specific, bring a week's worth and top up locally.
- Beach towels — if your hotel provides them (most do). Otherwise one per person is fine — they dry instantly in the heat.
- Fancy shoes for the adults — sandals, sandals, sandals. The cobblestones eat nice shoes.
- Lots of toys — one beloved item per child. The beach IS the entertainment.

Can I buy nappies and baby formula in Rhodes?
Yes — major brands at supermarkets (Lidl is cheapest, AB Vassilopoulos is well-stocked). Specific formula brands may differ; if your baby is brand-particular, bring a week's supply. Nappies: bring what you need for the journey, buy locally after.
Is tap water safe for kids to drink in Rhodes?
In most resort areas yes; in the far south it's sometimes avoided by locals. Bottled water is cheap and the easiest answer — buy a big bottle at the supermarket and refill kids' bottles from it.
What if my child steps on a sea urchin?
Common, rarely serious. The treatment: olive oil on the wound (abundant locally 😄), tweezers for visible spines, and leave any very deep ones — they dissolve over time. Any sign of infection: pharmacy first, which are excellent on this.
